The Bando Thirty-three Kannon Pilgrimage links 33 temples across Kanto. The official association permits any visiting order, whether on day trips or overnight journeys. Alongside photographs of the pilgrimage book, this guide explains offerings and the temple list.
What you need to know first
- Range of temples
- 33 temples in Tokyo and six prefectures: Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Ibaraki, Tochigi and Gunma.
- Order and distance
- The official route is approximately 1,300 km in total, and the temples may be visited in any order. There is no need to complete the route in one journey.
- Payment fee
- The official pilgrimage-supplies guide lists ¥500 for an inscription in a pilgrimage book, including repeat stamps, and ¥500 for a separate paper goshuin. Admission, books and transport are separate costs.
- Preparation of ledger
- Official pilgrimage books are listed at ¥1,500 and ¥2,500. Availability varies by temple and is not guaranteed at every stop.
Visit the principal image before receiving goshuin
The pilgrimage association asks visitors to pay their respects to the principal image before receiving a goshuin. Nokyo originally referred to offering copied sutras. Allow time for worship at each temple, rather than treating the route simply as stamp collecting.
Check each temple's method of issuing goshuin and its hours. The official list includes shortened visiting hours, changes to goshuin hours and closures. Older personal accounts alone are not a reliable basis for a timetable.
Numbers, temples, and regions of the 33 temples
The stops have been checked against the official temple list. Where names such as Hasedera and Kiyomizudera occur more than once, confirm the pilgrimage number and municipality. Use the linked official list for addresses and individual arrangements.

Combine nearby temples and consider the end time of the temple.
The order is free, so you can visit several temples at a time depending on your place of residence and transportation. However, even if it looks close on the map, there are some places that take a long time to travel due to mountain roads and the number of buses. Please check how to get to each temple and how to return.
A dedicated pilgrimage book makes it easier to organise the record of each temple. Check where to obtain your preferred book, then budget separately for goshuin offerings, admission and parking.
